LeVar Burton
LeVar Burton is an American actor, director, author, and educator known for his influential work in television, film, and literacy advocacy. He first gained widespread recognition for his role as Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries Roots, which portrayed the harrowing history of American slavery. This role earned Burton critical acclaim and launched his career. He later became a prominent figure in science fiction with his portrayal of Geordi La Forge, the blind chief engineer in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994), further cementing his place in pop culture. In addition to his acting, Burton is celebrated for his role as the host and executive producer of Reading Rainbow (1983–2006), a beloved PBS children’s show that encouraged literacy and a love of reading.
